Well, I did it. After all these years I broke down and got myself a Civil War dress. My Elisabeth has been doing some type of historical reenacting since she was a wee one beginning with cooking at a local historical festival and demonstrating at two other local historical sites. We live in an area surrounded by old history...old as in USA old. She began with the 18th century and has worked her way up to the 19th century and is doing a bit with WWII history...1940's. They all have their good points and are interesting in their own ways. I have, in the far away past, helped her with the 1700's things but then my outfit got loaned out and readjusted and scattered. So I have been more the behind the scenes person and the photographer. I have enjoyed this very much. I like to come and go as I please.
But something happened to me a few months ago. Both my babies were going to participate in a Civil War ball and I wanted to be part of it. I did not want to miss going with them and all the other families we knew. Elisabeth had been sewing her heart out trying to get her brother's shirt completed and his trousers and some other items she needed to do. So there was no time for her to help me sew a dress. After thinking it through I thought a day dress would be more practical than a ball gown for this ball anyway because I can wear the day dress at one of the local festivals and it would just be more practical for now. But I do plan on somehow getting a ball gown made for the next ball. THAT is how much I enjoyed this ball.
Two weeks ago one of the other moms and I drove to Gettysburg to find ourselves a dress.
Elisabeth came along as our advisor...and to get buttons.
We were very successful right away and treated ourselves to lunch afterwards. That is all I can say about it because I promised Will he could be the first in the family to post about the ball we attended as a family on Saturday evening.
You will have to wait for him to post, complete with pictures. I'll let you know when he does. I am dying to get pictures up so I will rush him along!Elisabeth is now working on a new 18th c petticoat for me so I can help her with some programs at one of the sites. I am looking forward to being able to do that with her.
Meanwhile I need to return to the year 2007 and go help a certain young man with some math.
Oh..and I did have a wonderful Mother's Day. Will gave me the most beautiful card and Elisabeth gave me a 1905 copy of Miss Tiggy-Winkle by Beatrix Potter. It is adorable. This is one of my favorite Beatrix Potter stories....the other being The Tailor of Gloucester. She also gave me a little pressed glass bowl that has molded into it these words..."THE NUT HOUSE" "Nuts of Quality" and a molded picture of a little house in between these words. On the back it says "This Jar Loaned Property of the United States Nut Co. New York, NY"
This cracked me up......she knew it would. It even has a little lid.
Adorable and I can even use to put nuts in too!
Here is one similar to it only mine has a little black metal lid...I think mine is a repro because this one in the pic is going for $145.00 at an auction house!
She paid less than $10.00 for mine...I just asked her to make sure! Around lunch we had a surprise visit from a dear family and we had a wonderful little picnic lunch in the yard! It was such a sweet visit and way too short.
Then we all napped because the ball kept us out until 1AM.
After that we drove over to a favorite roadside drive-in where they make their own ice cream. Coming with us were our old neighbors who are now blessed with 8 (soon to be 9) wonderful children .
All in all it was a very special day!
Throw in the CHAP homeschool fair in Harrisburg on Friday and it was a terrific weekend! Now I am pretty booked doing homeschool evaluations until the second week in June. It is always so much fun to see what everyone has done this past year. I use to go to the families homes but that wore me out quickly. Now I ask them to come here and I enjoy it much more. I am still having issues with my throat but am dealing with it through natural measures and the chiropractor. But does anyone have any good natural ideas for what is called silent reflux? That is a day time reflux that you can't really feel but affects your throat? I am pretty sure that is part of my problem. I have no pain just irritation with certain foods.
Didn't I go and get another tick bite last week too! I try to enjoy all God's creation but I am having trouble seeing the good in ticks.
Thank you to every one for your concerns and comments wishing me a happy birthday and Mother's Day too! I've been so awful at letting you know I have been thinking about you and reading your delightful posts!
But I have and I did!JOY to you all!!!!

hey great to hear form you I was just about to send you an email asking how you where doing since it has been so long. good to hear you had a great weekend.
Happy Mother's Day, indeed
thank you for the encouragement...
susan, i saw the pictures on will's blog--what fun you all had. i couldn't help but chuckle knowing what you had on under your dress. lol you look beautiful--good choice on the dress. now i want to go next year too. i wish i lived closer so we could create gowns together.
your relationship with your children is so warming to my heart. i love to see families that truely enjoy being a family. i feel that's our greatest calling in life, to be there for our children. nurturing and teaching them as they grow and then becoming adults and friends. zak wrote me a beautiful letter for mother's day. i cried reading it from beginning to end. today i've reread it at least five times, each time tears form. this morning i told him that i loved growing into friends with him, and that he was someone i always want to share and do things with. we love to do things together. you are so blessed to have elisabeth and will and to enjoy having fun with them too. teaching classes with your daughter--special memories you are making.
blessings and lots of love, mari

Wonderful update! I always love reading your posts! Wow, you do keep busy! That's wonderful about getting a dress. I'll have to head over to Will's and take look.
I was glad to see you Friday too! That was definitely too short.
Love you,
Priscilla
